Once upon a time, many many years again, the Riley County Fliers had regular monthly meetings at the flying field.  The purpose of these meetings were not primarily to conduct club business, but rather it provided a the club members a specific monthly date and time where they could fly together, share new toys, and introduce new or potential new members to the group /field.  Al, Arron, Cliff, Doug, Gary, Matt, and later Deon regularly attended those meetings and All Flew … even I flew. Occasionally we would conducte some club business but that was usually an aside.

Well things change … the hobby changed, the club member’s priorities changed, the field changed, the shed changed and we ever changed our mower… and  Gasoline is no longer  $1.00/ gallon … sorry.

Todd has started the club meeting discussions. A discussion that is well overdue. If you are still reading, it is apparent to me that the members are no long interested in a monthly “mini-fly-in” as a group … and equally apparent there is not sufficient club “business” to have 12 “face to face” monthly meetings a year.  It seems unfair to ask Al to spend a Sunday afternoon driving  to and from Manhattan just to give his  treasure’s report, then to possibly discuss “which company we should engage to re-charge the shed fire extinguisher”!  Who has the time or the interest to debate what the front gate padlock code numbers should be in 2020”? I live close buy and would not be interested especially if there is a NASCAR race on.

Todd started this important discussion … and now the group needs to decide the number of meetings they want/need; the dates of those meetings; the time(s) of the meetings; and finally the location of each meeting … then change the bye-laws to relicts those changes.

We could argue, but there are “required” club meetings, “probably” club meetings, and “possible” club ones. I can think of only one “required” annual club meeting for business purposes that would finalize; Election of officers;  Annual dues;  Gate lock change;  and Scheduling various club activities  ( ie: June fly-in date,  club fly-in date, maybe the entire mowing schedule).

A “possible” meeting would be an organization gathering for the June fly-in.
All other club issues could be handled with email and snail mail (dues checks) ... or call a “special” meeting as needed at the field or an off field location.

Lots to discuss in January!
